The District of Guysborough has initiated a partial activation of its Emergency Command Centre as Hurricane Fiona closes in on the region.

The storm is expected to make direct landfall in the eastern end of the municipality at or near the communities of Canso, Hazel Hill and Little Dover.

Preparations are underway to establish two “Safe Buildings” in the Municipality. They will be located at the Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex in Guysborough and the Canso/Hazel Hill Fire Station in Canso. They will be mobilized and ready to accept residents beginning at 6 tonight. The municipality has also established an emergency number that residents can call during the storm (902) 533-2088. In the event of a medical or fire emergency or you require the RCMP, call 911.

The municipality encourages seniors in particular who are living alone, who feel unsafe in the homes, live along the coast or in low lying areas prone to flooding and where there is potential road washouts to consider the “Safe Building” as an option.
