New sprayer for strawberries and low-growing crops

IDM, a company specializing in sprayers, has launched  Zancudo, a new sprayer for strawberry crops in tunnels and other low-growing crops in open fields.

Some years ago, Angel Barranco, the CEO of IDM, was visiting strawberry growers in el Bajío, Mexico, with Alfredo Celis from Agromotriz, IDM distributor in Mexico. There, he noticed that growers did the spraying with small backpack equipment, which requires a lot of people and doesn’t guarantee a uniform and efficient spraying to control pests.

Angel saw that the crop lines could be different because not all the tunnels had the same width, and not all the tunnels had the same number of crop lines. That made it quite tricky to mechanize spraying. The philosophy of IDM is to study the problem and start from a white sheet of paper to find the simplest and most suitable solution. In tunnels, there were 4, 5, 6, or 7 crop lines. “Starting from scratch, we designed a totally new machine which solved this problem perfectly,” says Angel Barranco. “The wheel axes, as well as the spraying booms, are extensible, and we can open or close them for 4,5,6 or 7 crop lines configuration”.

Additionally, the 4 wheels traction and 4 wheels steering system allow optimal maneuvering even in super narrow spaces.

“It is the machine which adapts itself to the grower and their crops, and not the other way around - which is what usually happens,” says Alessandro Talluto from IDM, who remarks that his clients appreciate very much the way IDM always listen to them and provides the best solution to their needs.

The Zancudo has an air turbine to pulverize the water drops, creating a mist with optimum penetration into the foliar density. The sprayer has a 500 lt tank with a self-filling system from an external tank.

“Our machines are designed following the growers’ needs and feedback,” Alessandro points out. “With increasing labor challenges, operating high-density crops, in greenhouses, tunnels, or outdoors, is getting more and more complicated. Thanks to IDM equipment, growers can directly address those challenges and increase the overall efficiency of their operation.”
