MARSHALL — A grass fire was put out near the railroad tracks south of the Archer Daniels Midland plant in Marshall on Tuesday afternoon.

Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said the fire didn’t cause damage, but firefighters and ADM staff worked to make sure the fire was extinguished.

Brunsvold said it’s not known what started the grass fire. When firefighters arrived at the scene, there weren’t flames visible, he said.

“There were a few spots still smoldering,” he said. There were tanker cars on the railroad tracks not far from the affected area, but Brunsvold said they were not at risk from the fire. The cars were also filled with corn syrup, and not ethanol, he said.

Brunsvold said the Marshall Fire Department used what is called a “pump and roll” technique at the fire scene. Water was pumped directly from the fire truck onto the smoldering area of grass as firefighters drove the truck forward.

“A couple of times a year we use (the technique), mostly on grass fires like that,” Brunsvold said.
