McHENRY — Earlier this month, members of the Deep Creek Fire Company gathered for in-service training on their new Hurst E-draulic extrication equipment.

The tools replace the company’s 20-year-old equipment and will allow crews to quickly and efficiently extricate entrapped patients from vehicle wrecks.

Fire Chief Jason King reported that the old equipment was purchased around 2000.

“Though the equipment was still in good condition, today’s vehicles have been engineered and reinforced stronger than in 2000,” King said. “This resulted in longer extrication times and in some cases the need to use separate equipment to perform the extrication.”

The old equipment needed a gasoline powered hydraulic pump to supply the needed force to cut and spread adequately. This proved to be very noisy when working the scene of an accident.

In addition, the old equipment used hoses to bring fluid from pump to tools, making mobility of tools very difficult.

“Using the old tools, we needed to get our apparatus within 100 feet of an accident,” King said.

He said the new Hurst E-draulic tools are battery operated, which makes for better mobility and communication during extrications, as there is no need for gasoline engines and hoses. These tools are all self-contained and can be submerged and operated under water.

New equipment includes a cutter, a spreader, two rams, eight batteries and an auxiliary 110-volt adapter to allow for emergency use in case of battery failure.

Training was provided by MES (Municipal Emergency Supply), which was the equipment supplier. Topics of the training included all aspects of the operation of the tools along with the most current extrication practices.

The cost of the nearly $40,000 equipment was covered through the company’s fundraising efforts such as the annual Gun and Cash Bash, Crab Feast, Golf Tournament and local community support.

“We strive to provide the best possible service to the citizens and visitors of Deep Creek and surrounding areas,” King said. “The community support we receive through our fundraising efforts allows us to provide efficient services with up-to-date equipment and training. We would like to thank all those who continue to support our efforts. Their support allows us to make purchases like this possible.”

The Deep Creek Fire Company was established in 1966. The charter was incorporated, which makes it a company rather than a department. This was a decision made by the founding members.

The organization ran calls from the Wisp resort until the original building was built. In 2014, the fire company expanded by erecting a 60-foot-square, three-truck, drive-through bay facility. The new expansion was engineered to accept a second floor, which is why it is so tall.
