PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Fire District (PCFD) announced the addition of a new piece of equipment to their arsenal with the Sapphire Infusion Pump Systems on Thursday. Critical Care Medics from Medic Ambulance 37 will be utilizing this new technology.
The new advanced infusion pump technologies enable the ability to provide rapid and accurate medication to patients in emergency situations and unpredictable settings before they arrive at a hospital. The technology allows for a smaller and more rugged design and does not need gravity like a typical hospital drip system, providing better efficiency when in use while en route.
A key benefit of the new pumps is that it ends the reliance on having to use Park City Hospital’s pumps while performing an interfacility transport of patients receiving medication infusions. Infusion pumps are a vital tool for hospitals, and being down a pump is not ideal.
PCFD will soon be carrying additional advanced medications that require a measured-dose infusion which can now be administered using the new pumps. In particular, advanced medication can now be administered to critically ill patients on the scene by having these new infusion pumps.
Critical Care Medics Chris Hampton, Steve Carroll, and Battalion Chief Max Dosher received training at Park City Hospital on the infusion pump as well as how to transfer patient care when a pump is needed.
PCFD says that in as soon as two to three weeks, the pumps and advanced medication will be available for specially trained crews to use in medical emergencies.
