A bout of heavy rain hit Lincolnshire last night, leaving areas across the county hit by flash floods.

With some routes not passable for a while as the floodwaters drained away last night, sandbags were distributed to residents and businesses in affected areas and roads were temporarily closed. With emergency crews working in the worst-hit areas, issues were dealt with quickly and the roads network has now been returned to normal.

There are currently nine enquiries awaiting assessment with a gully tanker also at Sherwood Drive, Spalding to assist with moving any remaining water by the side of the road. In terms of water affecting any properties, LCC investigates each instance of internal flooding to buildings and will follow-up on any reports received from this incident in due course.  

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways said: “We have seen our highways resilience kick in with emergency crews working extremely hard to be most effective where best needed. 

“Because we have seen such a lot of rain in a very short period of time, and especially after a prolonged stretch of dry hot weather, the nature of what we were faced with was very unpredictable.  

“I’m happy to say that we reacted quickly as soon as we received reports of where roads were affected. I would like to also thank several builder’s merchants around the Market Rasen area who helped with sandbagging and really showed a terrific community spirit which is very much appreciated.  

“I would also like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst our work and the network’s drainage system was taking place. To have the roads back to normal in such a short period of time for the people of our county is testimony to the hard work of our crews and everyone involved in a rapid response.”

Between 6pm on Tuesday (16 August) and 7.30am on Thursday (17 August), Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue responded to flash flooding across the county, taking 190 calls and attending 103 incidents. This was initially primarily in the Market Rasen and Louth area but also Lincoln, Potterhanworth, Middle Rasen and Scupholme. As the night went on, crews also attending flooding incidents in Spalding and surrounding areas of Pinchbeck, Gosberton, Surfleet, Gedney Drove End, Fosdyke and Wigtoft.

Fire crews and officers gave advice to occupiers, pumped flood water away from properties, and pumped out around 30 properties.

Flood waters have now subsided, and roads have reopened, but Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue would like to remind drivers of their advice for driving during periods of flooding:

Already we have had 10 incidents of flooding referred to us which meet our criteria for a flood investigation, so there will be flood investigations into the incidents of yesterday.

We will work through all the reports of flooding that have been made to us and see how many more will require investigating over the coming days and weeks.

There’s a full list of criteria on our website, but generally we investigate where one or more properties is internally flooded, a ‘critical service’ is flooded or cannot operate due to flooding nearby or access to a community is cut off. We get referrals from different agencies, but individuals are also welcome to report flooding to us by emailing the details to the Flood Risk Team at FloodRisk@lincolnshire.gov.uk.
