In Kachhar village in the Buxwaha area of Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, villagers were surprised to see a sudden spurt of fire with water from a hand pump. After the clip was recorded by bystanders, it went viral on social media. According to the local administration and geologists, the incident was not a miracle but had a scientific reason behind it.

According to local residents, the hand pump is installed near a school and there are only two hand pumps to quench the thirst of the whole village. Now one of the two hand pumps is spewing fire, adding to the concern of the village. The same villagers have informed the officials about this, after which the administration is now investigating the matter as to why this is happening.

“This information has just been found. Let us see what it is. I haven't seen it yet,” the Tehsildar of Buxwaha, Jham Singh said.

According to Narayan Yadav, a local resident, “Earlier, empty fire used to come out from the hand pump, now both fire and water are coming out simultaneously. There is no special arrangement for drinking water in the village. There are only two hand pumps out of which fire and water is coming out and the other is water.”

If analysed scientifically, in such cases, methane gas gets formed underground and the same thing sometimes comes out with water.

Speaking about the issue, Professor JP Singh explained, “The release of flammable gas along with the water from the hand pump is not a miraculous event. It is usually a hydrocarbon (methane) gas. Where sedimentary rocks contain plant residues along with sediments (fine sands) in marshy areas, methane gas is formed by dissolution-decomposition by physico-chemical processes.”

“This gas is reduced in density by heating or burning, as a result of which it rises up and a vacuum is created, due to which the ground water below this gas also rises upwards. This sequence goes on alternately. Sedimentary rocks like sandstone, shale etc. are found in Buxwaha,” he added.
