BROCKTON – Brian Leite, the man accused of burning down the historic Statehouse on the Brockton fairgrounds property, has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

On Friday morning, July 15,  Brockton Superior Court Associate Justice Brian S. Glenny ordered Leite be examined at Bridgewater State Hospital on Wednesday, July 20, ahead of his dangerousness hearing re-scheduled for the same day.

The dangerousness hearing was originally scheduled for Friday.

Leite, who was dressed in a dark green sweater and was wearing handcuffs in Brockton Superior Court on Friday, July 15,  allegedly set fire to the historic 1932 Statehouse building, on March 17, 2021.

At his July 8 arraignment Leite pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him, including one count of burning a building, three counts of burning wood or other property, one count of malicious injury to a building and one count of breaking and entering.

According to Alexander Zane, the assistant district attorney prosecuting the case, "the suspect was caught on security cameras wearing a thick black winter coat, a red and black-checkered scarf, blue sneakers and red sweatpants with a black and white horizontal line near the knee."

Those clothes were discarded that night in a nearby stream, and DNA test results link Leite to the discarded clothing, Zane said.

There were two additional fires in the city on March 17, 2021, during the larger fire at the fairgrounds, a fourth fire later in the morning and a fifth was discovered in the daylight.

An outside fire was reported at West Middle School, at 271 West St., at the same time as the fairgrounds fire.

Another outside fire – a small brush fire – was reported at D.W. Field Park on Pleasant Street about 1:55 a.m.

In the daylight that morning, a fire was discovered at Marciano Stadium at Brockton High School, where "an item was burned on the football field and damaged the artificial turf," according to the state fire marshal's office.

Later that morning, around 4:40 a.m., a fire also broke out in a home on Ellsworth Avenue. At the time, that fire was not considered suspicious.

Leite seemed composed in Superior Court on Friday morning, making expressive gestures as he quietly chatted to the security guard next to him while his court-appointed counsel Tiny Green spoke to the judge.
