BOSTON (WHDH) - Boston Fire said local businesses might be impacted by a large water main break in one of the busiest intersections in Chinatown this morning.

Water has been gushing out since early this morning, flooding the area of Washington Street and LaGrange Street. The street and sidewalk on Washington Street buckled around 8 a.m. as water continues to flow out. Officials said they plan on fixing the damage once the water stops coming out. The flooding has impacted several areas including portions of Washington Street, LaGrange Street and Kneeland Street. Boston Water was still working to clear the water with a pump by 9 a.m.

Boston Fire said they received a call about the water main break at 5:30 a.m. and crews have been working to clean up the scene since then. Video from earlier in the morning shows the flooding turning the street into a small river and a few cars parked in the area were even seen deep in the water. Boston Police issued a traffic warning at 6:39 a.m. and have been working with Boston Fire to divert traffic and pedestrians as crews worked to clear the scene.

“Don’t walk through the water you don’t know how deep it is, there could be holes in there, there could be sinkholes so try to avoid this area if possible just until they clear it up” said one firefighter. “The area is taped off for safety reasons so just avoid it if you can.”

It’s not yet clear if the incident is related to a tweet from Boston Water that said crews would be working in the same area Thursday evening.

BWSC will begin emergency leak detection work beginning at 4:30 this evening on our water system downtown on Washington at LaGrange Street and Washington at West Street. Boston Police details have been requested to help facilitate traffic.
